Agricultural Research Council

Public Relations Officer · Institute for Soil, Climate and Water

Institute for Soil, Climate and Water - field research
Institute for Soil, Climate and Water - research communication in the field.

The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is South Africa's principal agricultural research institution, responsible for generating knowledge and innovations that contribute to sustainable agriculture, food security, environmental resilience and rural development.

As Public Relations Officer for the Institute for Soil, Climate and Water, I support the communication of scientific research to diverse audiences, including researchers, government departments, farmers, development organisations, industry stakeholders and the public.

My role combines strategic communication, public relations, stakeholder engagement and corporate communication to ensure that research is communicated accurately, professionally and in ways that support knowledge sharing and public understanding.

My Role

Communication within a research institution requires more than producing content. It requires an understanding of scientific work, the ability to translate technical information into accessible language and the judgement to communicate research in ways that remain accurate while being meaningful to different audiences.

My responsibilities include developing communication material, coordinating media and stakeholder engagement, strengthening institutional visibility and supporting researchers in communicating their work through multiple communication platforms.

Working closely with multidisciplinary teams has strengthened my ability to communicate complex research in ways that support public education, agricultural development and informed decision-making.

Areas of Responsibility

My work at the ARC includes responsibility for:

  • Strategic communication planning
  • Public relations and institutional communication
  • Research communication
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Media relations
  • Corporate communication
  • Digital communication
  • Event communication
  • Public awareness campaigns
  • Corporate branding
  • Internal communication
  • Executive communication support
  • Knowledge dissemination
  • Communication resource development

Communicating Research

One of the most rewarding aspects of my work has been supporting researchers by translating scientific knowledge into communication that can be understood and used by broader audiences.

Research findings only create value when they are shared in ways that enable people to apply them. This has involved preparing communication material that makes technical information accessible to farmers, policymakers, agricultural practitioners, development partners and members of the public while maintaining scientific accuracy.

The work has ranged from promoting climate resilience and sustainable agriculture to supporting public awareness around soil health, weather information, agroecology and environmental conservation.

Strategic Communication

Communication planning forms an important part of every project.

Each initiative requires an understanding of project objectives, intended audiences, stakeholder expectations and organisational priorities before communication activities begin.

My contribution has included developing communication plans, producing campaign material, coordinating communication activities and ensuring consistency across communication platforms while supporting institutional objectives.

Whether supporting a national awareness day or an international engagement, communication has been approached as a planned, coordinated process rather than a collection of isolated activities.

Public Relations & Media Engagement

Public relations supports the relationship between an institution and the people it serves.

My work has included preparing media releases, developing communication material, supporting media engagement, coordinating publicity for institutional activities and identifying opportunities to increase the visibility of research and public awareness initiatives.

This has involved working closely with researchers and project teams to communicate scientific work accurately while ensuring information remains accessible to media professionals, stakeholders and the wider public.

Stakeholder Engagement

Research has its greatest impact when it is shared through collaboration.

Throughout my work at the ARC, I have supported engagement with researchers, farmers, producer organisations, government departments, industry representatives, academic institutions, development partners, communication practitioners and community stakeholders.

These engagements have contributed to stronger relationships, improved knowledge sharing and greater public visibility of research programmes and institutional initiatives.

Corporate Communication & Brand

Maintaining a consistent institutional identity is an important part of public communication.

I have contributed to the development of corporate communication resources that strengthen the visual identity of the Institute for Soil, Climate and Water across both digital and print platforms.

This work has included designing and standardising:

  • LinkedIn banners
  • Website banners
  • Digital display screens
  • Corporate presentation templates
  • Infographics
  • Event branding
  • Communication templates
  • Social media graphics
  • Information resources
  • Promotional material

Every communication resource was developed in alignment with the ARC Corporate Identity Guidelines to ensure consistency across institutional communication.

Public Education & Knowledge Sharing

Public communication plays an important role in ensuring that research reaches the people who can benefit from it.

Many of the projects I have supported involve making agricultural research more accessible through practical communication products, public awareness initiatives and stakeholder engagement activities.

This includes communicating information related to sustainable agriculture, climate resilience, soil management, environmental stewardship and agricultural innovation to audiences with different levels of technical knowledge.

Where appropriate, communication materials have also been adapted into Afrikaans and isiXhosa to improve accessibility for farming communities and stakeholders across the Northern Cape and other regions.
